For the last few years the winters in NYC have been mild with hardly any snow. The recent snow reminds me of the blizzard we had 10 years ago in January 2014 that was part of the bigger system that affected the Northeast United States. Approximately 4,000 flights were cancelled over 2 days, and both New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency. What I mostly remember was how the Hudson River and New York Harbor froze over. While I know it was treacherous for the Staten Island Ferry captains and extra caution was taken, I couldn’t help thinking how cool it was breaking through the ice of the frozen river. I figured if I never make it to Antarctica, this may be as close as I get to feeling like I am there as the ferries broke through the ice chunks. Here are photos from 1/23/2014 from the ferry on the way to work.
