The Country Where I…

Country where I helped make a new hiking trail in exchange for room and meals.

Uganda

In the Virunga Mountains near the Rwandan border.
Country where I was gifted a Bob Marley CD for Christmas.

Israel Did a gift exchange with local friends on holiday.
Country where I caught the flu. Greece

Wasn’t bad. Went to a nearby hospital and was treated.

Country where I lost a tooth filling. Lesotho

And got a new one there too at the dentist.

Country where I only have about 5 photos because I ran out of money to buy more film.

Zimbabwe Would like to go back someday.
Country where I bartered my hiking boots for a tall wooden giraffe souvenir because I ran out of money.

Still

Zimbabwe

Would like to go back someday.
Country where I ran out of money. Still

Zimbabwe

Would like to go back someday.

Country where I got my PADI deep diving certificate.

Egypt

But I let it expire many years ago.

Country where I visited for the shortest amount of time. Japan

7 hours. Plan to go back someday.

Country I passed through entirely on a train.

Luxembourg Didn’t have time to stop and stay a few days.

Country where I took a picture standing next to a cow.

Switzerland Though not sure why.

Country where I flew to the wrong airport to visit my friend.

Venezuela Flew to Caracas. Was supposed to fly to Maracaibo.

Country where I found a scorpion in the shared bathroom sink of the hotel.

Tanzania A hotel staff member caught it and threw it outside.
Country where I was given a live chicken as a parting gift. Lesotho

Right when I was resigned to try and kill and pluck it myself, the mother of a local friend did it for me.

Country where my first meal was Pizza Hut and 7-Up. Peru

Because the relative of my travel partner where we were staying thought that’s what we would want. We graciously ate it.

Country where I flew there for free because I won a contest. Iceland At the NY Travel & Adventure Show in 2023.

Country where I slept with live geckos on the wall of my hotel room.

Malawi Nothing uncommon about that. But still pretty neat.

Country where I ate nearly all cheese on a weekend trip because that’s mostly what was in the stores at the time.

Mozambique The country was recovering from years of civil war and resources were limited.

Country where a stranger let us sleep in his car because he didn’t think it was safe for us to camp outside.

South Africa And the hotel staff let him move his car into the courtyard so they could keep an eye on us.
Country where all I ate one day was a whole pineapple. Uganda

I was running low on money and didn’t want to waste any pineapple. I might have had some crackers too.

Country where my friend and I got separated in a crowd and did not reconnect until 18 hours later.

Mexico

Before smartphones or mainstream internet. We failed to make a backup plan on where to meet if we got separated.

Country where I attended the most amazing wedding of a friend.

France It was in a chalet in Nantes with unlimited wine and amazing countryside views.
Country where I missed the last tram at the top of a mountain and had to walk two hours down the mountain in the dark.

Chile But the roads were paved, there were a few other people, and cell phone reception was good.

Country where I fainted in line at the bank. Lesotho People around took care of me. But I still had to wait in line.
